Original MapBench research
Geographic studies built from transparent calculations
These studies use MapBench datasets and documented geographic methods to answer questions that go beyond a single calculator. Each page explains the dataset, formula, ranking method and limitations so the result can be checked rather than treated as a black box.
The Most Isolated Major Cities in MapBench's World-City Dataset
Which major cities sit farthest from their nearest peer? We compare every city with every other city using great-circle distance.
Read study →Which Major Cities Have the Most Other Major Cities Within 500 km?
A transparent comparison of major-city clustering using a fixed 500 km great-circle radius and the same curated city dataset used by MapBench tools.
Read study →Which Major Cities Have Another Major City Closest to Their Antipode?
For every city we calculate the exact opposite point on Earth, then find the nearest city in the MapBench major-city dataset.

Short, ordered lists where each pick has a reason. No sponsored placements, no tools that need an account.
- Best Free Online Map ToolsIf you only bookmark one thing, bookmark the directory; if you bookmark three, take a radius map, a distance calculator and a coordinate converter.
- Best Free Distance CalculatorsPick by question, not by brand: pairs of towns, many pairs at once, or coordinates you already have.
- Best Free Map Radius CalculatorsDraw one circle to bound the question, then convert it to a drive-time area before you promise anything to a customer.
- Best Free Route PlannersTwo stops is a calculator; more than two is an optimisation problem, and those need different tools.
- Best Free GPS and Location ToolsFinding yourself is the easy half; naming what you found, and checking a recorded track, is where the useful tools are.
- Best Online Geographic CalculatorsChoose the calculator that names its model. The number matters less than knowing whether it came from a sphere, a network or a Census polygon.
Learn the geography behind the tools
Practical guides explain coordinate systems, distance methods, map files, projections, land measurement and other topics where the right method matters as much as the final number.
How to Calculate Distance Between Two Coordinates
The haversine formula explained step by step, with worked examples in kilometres, miles and nautical miles — and the cases where the spherical answer is not good enough.
How to Find the Halfway Point Between Two Cities
Why averaging two coordinates gives the wrong midpoint, how the spherical midpoint is actually calculated, and how to pick a fair meeting point for more than two people.
How to Convert Coordinates to an Address
Reverse geocoding explained: what turns a latitude and longitude into a street address, why the answer can be approximate, and how to check a result before you rely on it.
How to Calculate Cost Per Mile (and What It Leaves Out)
Build a defensible cost-per-mile figure from fuel, maintenance, depreciation and insurance — and see which costs a simple fuel calculator cannot capture.
How to Measure Fence Length and Count Posts
Measure the run on a map, allow for gates, corners and terrain, and work out how many posts and panels a fence actually needs.
How to Calculate Seed Rate Per Acre
Convert a recommended seed rate into bags for your actual field, accounting for germination, row spacing, overlapping and the difference between drilled and broadcast.
Documented data sources
MapBench identifies the source behind geographic results instead of hiding data provenance. Depending on the tool, sources include OpenStreetMap-based services, Valhalla/OSRM routing, US Census data, Natural Earth, Copernicus elevation data and the IANA time-zone database.
Frequently asked questions
What is MapBench?+
MapBench is a free collection of interactive map tools, geographic calculators, printable blank maps, original geographic studies and practical mapping guides. Use it for distance, radius, drive time, coordinates, elevation, GPS files, location questions and more.
Are the tools really free?+
Yes. Public MapBench tools are free to use and do not require an account.
Do the tools work on mobile?+
Yes. MapBench is responsive and most tools work in modern mobile browsers. Location tools can use device location when you grant permission.
What data sources does MapBench use?+
MapBench uses documented public and open geographic sources including OpenStreetMap-based mapping and geocoding, public routing services, Natural Earth, US Census data and Copernicus elevation data where relevant.
Do the tools work outside the United States?+
Most tools are worldwide. Some tools are US-focused because the underlying ZIP, county or government dataset is specific to the United States; coverage is labelled on the page.
How accurate are the calculations?+
Accuracy depends on the method and dataset. MapBench documents whether a result uses geometric distance, road-network routing, public boundaries, browser location or another source, and highlights important limitations on each tool page.
Is my location or file data stored?+
Browser-first tools keep processing local where possible. When a lookup needs an external public service, only the data needed for that request is sent. File tools are designed to process supported files locally in the browser where stated.
Is MapBench suitable for legal, surveying or safety-critical decisions?+
MapBench is intended for everyday analysis, learning and planning. Official boundaries, legal descriptions, surveying, emergency decisions, engineering and regulated work should be verified with the responsible authority or a qualified professional.
